Mary’s Story: From Test to Testimony
For Mary, her home of 40 years has always been a place of peace, memories, and stability. But earlier this year, that peace was disrupted when a severely rusted main pipe in her basement burst—causing her first major plumbing crisis since moving in decades ago.
What began as a sudden plumbing failure quickly spiraled into a daily challenge. Without functioning water lines and a working shower, Mary found herself having to drive to her son’s home just to bathe. What many of us take for granted became a logistical and emotional burden.
“I would not have known what else to do.” Mary shared. “Having to leave my house just to take a shower was something I never imagined I'd have to do.”
That’s when a former co-worker told her about Nehemiah Project Community Development Corporation (NPCDC). Her friend had received help through the organization and encouraged Mary to reach out.
What followed was a true turning point.
Thanks to Nehemiah Project and the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management's Care and Conserve Plumbing Repair Program, Mary’s home received much-needed, critical upgrades:
Replacement of the water heater
Installation of a new shut-off valve
New water lines throughout the home
ADA-compliant toilet installation
Brand new bathroom and kitchen faucets
Repaired and unclogged pipes that previously forced Mary to dump used water outdoors manually
But for Mary, the most joyful moment wasn’t seeing the new fixtures or the repaired basement. It was much simpler—and more profound.
“I couldn’t wait to take a shower in my own home again,” she said with a glowing smile. “That was the one thing I missed the most. It made me feel whole again.”
Mary’s story is one of resilience, community, and the power of connection. At NPCDC, we are honored to be a part of helping long-time residents like her maintain the dignity, safety, and comfort of their homes.
