Ellen’s Story of Resilience and Legacy

Maintaining safe, functional homes for longstanding residents is vital to preserving community heritage. Through the Nehemiah Project Community Development Corp (CDC), home repair programs empower individuals like Ms. Ellen to sustain their homes and maintain their connection to their neighborhoods.

Ellen’s family has lived in Fulton County for over 100 years, contributing significantly to its development. Her father, who helped pave local roads, left a lasting legacy. In 2009, he chose the family home as a cornerstone for their future, though he passed away before moving in. Ellen embraced the home as a foundation for her family’s legacy.

By 2019, Ellen sought home repairs while balancing caregiving responsibilities for her aging mother and two daughters, one of whom has special needs. Her mother’s injury, however, shifted her focus, delaying necessary improvements.

In 2024, Ellen turned to the Nehemiah Project CDC, an organization committed to supporting residents in maintaining safe and sustainable housing. Ellen received critical home upgrades:

  • Installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Two accessible grab bars

  • New bathroom faucets and accessible toilets

These repairs improved safety, reduced water bills, and significantly enhanced her daughter’s independence, enabling her to navigate the home with greater ease.

Ellen’s story reflects the profound impact of home repair programs. Beyond improving living conditions, these programs preserve multigenerational legacies and strengthen communities. The Nehemiah Project CDC ensures that residents like Ellen can remain in their homes and thrive, safeguarding the heritage of those who came before them.
