Sheryl’s Home Restored: Relief, Renewal, and Gratitude

For 23 years, Sheryl Atwater has called her house on Lois Lane in Southeast Atlanta home. It’s where memories have been made, where laughter has echoed through the walls, and where she’s built a life grounded in faith, love, and perseverance. But like many older homes, time had taken its toll. A rocking toilet and a persistent leak beneath her kitchen sink were becoming more than just inconveniences—they were serious threats to the safety and livability of her home. The leak had already rotted the wood of her kitchen cabinet and allowed mildew to take root.

A friend told her about the Nehemiah Project and the Care & Conserve Plumbing Repair Program through the Department of Watershed — and that changed everything. Just to name a few:

  • Her rocking toilet was replaced with an ADA-compliant one

  • The leak under the sink was repaired and the rotted wood was replaced

  • A new water shut-off valve and pressure-reducing valve were installed

She now has a safer, more comfortable home

“I didn’t know how I was going to get all of this fixed. I’m so grateful for the people who cared enough to help me keep my home safe,” Sheryl shared.

There is a great deal of power in community support and collaboration.
